Roots Reach

aime was quiet the following day at school. After she’d rested up the reminder of the previous day, her anxieties were leveled out once again. There were whispers of her episode among the other students, but she was back to not caring about school gossip. Her thoughts were preoccupied with more important things anyway.

Flora was not at school today, and Jaime wasn’t sure why. After everything she had learned from her aunt about Buyan, she was fairly certain Flora couldn’t get sick. What could possibly prevent her from coming to school then?

Her dad mentioned a freak storm in the middle of town, but they hadn’t had any rain at their house. Aunt Kris said she thought she had heard thunder in the distance, though. The folder left on their patio the night before was all the more perplexing. Jaime had dedicated her full attention to deducing what might have happened, much to her friends’ exhaustion.

“Jay, did you even pay attention during lunch?” Leif probed on the way out of school. “Flora is going to need help with makeup work, remember?”

“Makeup work?” She spoke for the first time that day.

“Yeah,” Chelsea reiterated, surprised to hear Jaime finally speak, “you said your worksheet from the last class yesterday was on your doorstep, so Flora kept her end of the deal with your aunt. Did you save anything for her?”

“That means I have to go see her to give her makeup work,” Jaime mused aloud as her eyes sparkled with inspiration. “Thanks, Lei. You’re brilliant.”

The tall youth blinked down at the compliment. Jaime didn’t waste time heading to her bus. It was a good thing her aunt worked from the house. Her office was just what she needed right now.

“What’s up with Jaime today?” Jake questioned the late burst of energy with a perplexed look on his face. “Has she ever looked that excited after school?”

“Nope!” Chelsea shrugged dramatically. Her arms were wrapped around her waist as if the chill was seeping through her peacoat. “I think Flora made a great impression on her. They seemed to have hit it off fast.”

“She wouldn’t be the only one,” Leif muttered under his breath, glancing at the pale-blue sky. Too bad there wasn’t an attractive guy flying by…

“You say something, Lei?” Jake asked when he noticed the longing gaze.

“No, I was just agreeing with Chels. Jaime has definitely gotten passionate out of nowhere. Will this bode well or not for our secret banshee?”

“She would make a great rock screamer,” Jake declared with a satisfied nod.

“Well, I’m heading home, guys. I gotta take care of some things,” Chelsea piped up as she turned toward her bus, still hugging herself. “See you tomorrow!” Jake and Leif waved her off before frowning.

“Must be a bad day,” Leif noted as they walked toward Jake’s bus.

“She hides it so well. It’s scary.” Jake’s comment sounded defeated. “See you tomorrow, Lei.”

“You’re not coming over?”

“Naw.” Jake shook his head. “I need to go over my syllabus in geography tonight. I’ll call you later.
